The 3rd International Conference on Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use in Arid Lands (First Circular)
2025-04-13
In December 2022, the second phase of The 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, also known as COP-15, was successfully held in Montreal, Canada, which adopted the historic “Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework” (hereinafter referred to as the “GBF”). The GBF established a “30x30 target”,which aims to conserve 30% of terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine areas by 2030. It sets a direction for global biodiversity conservation and presents new opportunities and challenges for biodiversity protection in arid regions.
Arid regions account for approximately one-third of the Earth's land surface area and possess rich and unique biodiversity, playing a critical role in supporting human livelihoods and well-being. However, the ecosystems are highly vulnerable, and climate change combined with human activities have exacerbated the risks of biodiversity loss, threatening regional ecological security and sustainable development.
To promote international scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange in the field of arid-region biodiversity research and to implement the “Declaration on Conserving Biodiversity and Building a Community of All Life in Arid Lands” the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences plans to convene the 3rd International Conference on Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use in Arid Lands.
